Under much scrutiny, and despite the 2020 college football season being reinstated, albeit late, Rashawn Slater opted out of his final year of college football, and immediately headed to Frisco, Texas to work with Duke Manyweather.
His reasoning was that a year spent one-on-one with Duke would set him apart in skills and experience for the 2021 season.
Slater was drafted 13th overall by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021. Slater had not played in a football game in close to 2 years and by the time he reported for training camp, Manyweather and Slater had worked together for close to 300 days, compiling over 200 workouts through 45 weeks which was roughly 11 months.
Slater went on to start all 16 games and had a dominant rookie season, in which he earned 2nd Team All-Pro honors, a Pro Bowl selection, was named to the All-Rookie team, and even received 4 votes for Offensive Rookie of the Year. Slater was also voted as the 79th best player in the NFL Network's Top 100
In 2025 Rashawn Slater became the highest-paid Offensive Tackle in history, signing a four-year, $114 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Chargers, which includes $92 million guaranteed.
